Micro-Chip Identification
What is a micro-chip?
These microchips are encased in a non-reactive glass capsule that has been modified slightly to allow the body to hold onto the capsule, preventing migration of the microchip. Scanners are used whenever needed to read the identification number of the microchip.
Why would my pet need one?
Recent events, Cerro Grande Fire, and Hurricane Katrina, have shown how critical it is to have a means of restoring lost pets with frantic owners. Many more might have been reunited if they had been microchipped and registered. Also, we would recommend in view of the lessons learned from the above events, that your emergency contact person is someone NOT living close to you, but preferably out of state.
Where, when and how is the chip placed?
Prior to being implanted, the microchip is scanned to confirm its identification number. The microchip is then implanted under the skin on the back between the shoulder blades. While most cats and dogs tolerate the implant procedure with out problems, the needle used for the microchip is fairly large and may cause some discomfort when used. An ideal opportunity to implant the microchip is when your pet is under general anesthesia for some other procedure, such as spaying, neutering or dentals.
How does the micro-chip work to return my pet?
Each microchip has its own unique number. This number is registered along with the name of the pet; the pet owner's name, address, and phone numbers; and the veterinarian's name, address and phone number. Veterinarians and animal shelters that are using the scanners can call the registration service to obtain the name of the owners of any lost pet that has been `microchipped'.
We have a scanner as does the Los Alamos Animal Shelter. The more shelters that have scanners the better the chances are for a lost pet to be identified. Please contact your local shelters and ask them to obtain a scanner if they do not already have one.
